The Wild Card Factor --Short (relatively) story I wrote a few years ago, considered by most to be one of my best, though it is also one of my first.  It's actually the second, but I think of it as the first, since it is really the first serious, full length story.

1995

Most of this comes from my tenth grade creative writing class. I credit Mrs. Hood with a great deal. I was at a point where I could have either hated writing or loving it, and she tipped me in the right direction.

Attack

Superstitions

911 -- One of my few 'real world' stories. Not one of my favorites; I'm constantly surprised at the number of people that tell me they like this one, though.

Cadets -- Specifically intended to focus on character development, it sports a rather unoriginal plot.

La Deesse Perdue  I wrote this for French Class. I'm not too good at poetry, but somehow it sounds better in French.  The translation is below the original.

The Star-Eyed Queen  Another one from 10th grade Creative Writing.  It's not finished, and I was going to rewrite parts of it that seemed really corny.  So if something looks funny, I may have been in the middle of editing it and never actually did.  ;oP  I think it would make a really good Disney movie, actually--assuming you shortened it and oversimplified it dramatically.  I know it says to be continued, but ah, don't hold your breath.  I was on a deadline and I wrote the end in a rush, that's my excuse for how badly that part of it stinks ;oP

1999

Most of this will be from my Fiction Writing Class my second year at the University of Virginia. Had I had this class before Mrs. Hood's, this page would never have been created. I appologize for the exceptionally poor quality of work in this section.

Untitled  This is my first assignment for ENWR 250.  'Write a scene or short story, 2-5 pages, that is dialog-driven.'  Be kind...

On her deathbed  I hate this piece. ;oP  I really, really do.  It's based on the story Hills By White Elephants, by Hemmingway.  The assignment was to take a character from one of the stories we'd read, and record their 'deathbed utterances.'  The point of the excercise is to explore the part of the short story that is left untold--parts of the characters' histories that aren't explained, and of course the 'what happens after.'  If you haven't read Hills Like White Elephants, it may not make as much sense as it should

Ask Me No Questions  This week's assignment was to imagine what our parents were like at our age, taking the facts we knew and expanding on that with our imagination.  Well, I really didn't feel comfortable with that assignment, so I did this instead--I don't think my teacher was amused.  Of my opinion, it's by far the better of the three. At the very least, it's the most satisfying.

Pavilion Upper Level   This piece was based on/inspired by a painting by Philip Geiger of the same name, which you can see here.

Life is a Flower  My first full short-story from my fiction class.  It's got numerous problems, but it's not bad for what it is.  Depressing, though--be warned.  The song that inspired the title is here.

POV  Lousy.  ;oP

Untitled  Sort of a continuation of Cadets, in a way--It's not completely finished, but it wasn't really a complete thought when it was done, either, just a whim.  I'd say I may do more work on it--but I know just how many of you would believe me if I did ;oP
