Lila was curled up on her couch, dressed for comfort in her jeans and largest T-shirt. Wildwing sat on the floor, leaned up against the soft armchair behind him. He was also dressed, for once, to relax, in his warmup pants and a white tank top. His jacket was thrown over the back of his chair.

"Isn't it nice to have nothing to do?" he asked. Lila grinned at him around her spoonful of chocolate ice cream. "Gotta napkin?" Lila leaned over and handed him a paper napkin, which he used to wipe a stray glob of soy sauce off of his knee, then went back to picking the peppers out of his Kung Pow Chicken.

Lila's unlocked door chimed and open, and they lazily looked over to see Duke standing in the doorway, Italien takeout in one hand and a six pack of soda in the other. He lifted an eyebrow. "Am I interupting anything?"

"Not at all," Lila greeted, waving him in with her spoon. "Come join the party." Duke chose a spot on the floor next to Lila's silent television and opened his dinner. For a moment the only sounds were the sounds of the three ducks eating.

"Where's Nosedive tonight?" Duke wanted to know.

"Out with Thrash and Mookie," Wing told him after swallowing a mouthful of Chinese food. "Mal's with Tanya at the launch in Florida, and Grin's in his room meditating or something like that."

"Oh. Hmph." Silence reigned again.

"Hey, Lai, can I ask you something?" Wing said suddenly, studying a pepper that was staked on his fork (he had abandonned the chopsticks after a 10-second attempt at using them).

"Shoot," Lila shrugged, scraping the bottom of her ice cream cup.

"How'd you get in with the Resistance? I mean, I can see they would need doctors, but what made them come after someone so young?"

"Well," Lila sighed, "I guess it was a lot of things. First off, I'd been inside Dragaunus's master tower. Most of the government officials were taken there and bullied into supporting the invasion. They took me there to try and threaten my father. We were sedated on the way there, and the way back, so we didn't know where the tower was, but the information on the inside that I had was very useful to them."

"But that must have been in the beginning of the war," Wildwing pointed out. "How could you still remember enough of that to do any good?"

"Photographic memory, kid," Duke told him. "How else do you think she finished med school at 20?"

Wildwing looked at her. "You've been practicing for 2 years?" he asked in surprise.

"I've been liscenced for two years," Lila corrected him. "And playing field medic in a war hardly counts as a formal practice."

"Still. I didn't know that."

"The Resistance did," Lila replied. "Someone managed to save enough government and military records to dig my name up. If they could get me in somewhere, I could tell them everything they wanted to know about it. Draw a map, whatever."

"I'm surprised they didn't put you to work with Tanya, coming up with inventions to help them." Wildwing commented.

"Even if I would have agreed to it," Lila answered, "I wouldn't have been able to help them. Remembering a diagram in a textbook isn't the same thing as understanding and manipulating the kind of complex theories that T-bird works with. That kind of thing requires dedication. Tanya works with mechanics and engineering because it interests her. I think it's downright boring. But my memory isn't the only thing they were after. I was exposed to classified defense knowledge, I had extensive knowledge of Puckworld's interplanetary relations and what our allies are capapble of, and how likely they were to get involved . . ."

"Stuff Dragaunus would love to know."

"Exactly. So the Resistance came after me pretty soon after it got organized. I mentioned Tanya to them, and they went after her as well. Very few people actually volunteered for the Resistance, because anyone who knew where to go or who to contact was immediately under suspicion if they didn't have someone to vouch for them. Mal had her dad. Tanya had me. You guys had Canard. Grin had a friend back on Puckworld that pulled him in."

"What about you, Duke?" Wildwing wanted to know. Duke grinned.

"I had her," he nodded toward Lila. She smiled.

"Duke came in the hard way. On a stretcher. He tripped up some hunter drones to let one of our teams get away, and when he got blasted for his pains, they brought him along. No one paid much attention until he woke up and we figured out who he was. By that time he was already under my care, and I wasn't about to let them kick him out. Instead, they put him under my direction until he proved himself trustworthy."

"That took a while," Duke made a face. "Most untrusting bunch I ever saw. Except our girl, here. She was one of the few willing to take a chance on me. It was really inspiring, the way everyone else picked up on her. The girl's a born leader."

"I wouldn't go that far," Lila said quickly. Duke grinned.

"Well, maybe not, but she had that entire cell wrapped around her little finger. They all absolutely adored her." Lila blushed. "I think it really used to bug Canard that they loved her as much as they respected him. It just wasn't something you could help, you know? She knew everyone's name, and she took the time to listen to their problems. She had a kind word for just about everybody, and Canard was the only one that could make her angry on a regular basis. It takes a lot to get this girl's goat, lemme tell you."

"Duke, you're embarassing me," Lila admonished, red-faced.

"Good. It's about time someone gave you the credit you were due."

"Ignore him, Wildwing," Lila instructed, rolling her eyes. "I don't know where he's getting this."

"I do," Wildwing answered, setting his now-empty takeout box aside. "Dive told me how you talked to him when we first got here. Not to mention how you came looking for me everytime you thought something was up. You cared enough to come find out what was bugging us. Wouldn't surprise me if you even managed to crack Mal. You have a talent for getting us to admit problems no one else notices."

"I'm a doctor. It's my job," Lila informed them shortly. "Part of making sure the body is healthy is making sure the mind isn't dragging it down."

Wildwing grinned and let it drop at that.
